Our prisons are nearly full. If we don’t do anything now, we risk a total breakdown of law and order. Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood MP and Amy Rees spoke at UK Prime Minister to outline government action on the prison capacity crisis. 👇 Find out more: bit.ly/44Effqn

Illicit drugs, brought in by an influx of drones, were found to be affecting outcomes at Ranby prison. Nearly a quarter of prisoners surveyed said they had developed a drug or alcohol problem since they had been at the jail. Outcomes for prisoners depended very much on where they were housed - about 700 people were living in badly dilapidated accommodation, with many cells lacking basic furniture and almost no self-cook facilities. "By every measure things were worse for these men"

A reminder that purposeful activity isn’t delivered well in a lot of prisons at the moment. Last year HMI Prisons published a report showing of 38 adult prisons they visited, more than half received the lowest grade of poor, and only one had improved.

HMI Prisons The same report showed that in reception prisons, half of all prisoners spent more than 22 hours in their cell every day, including on a weekday

About half of all prisoners didn’t get a single qualification at school. If we are linking sentencing with education, we can’t just expect all prisoners to have the skillset to engage in education. If we aren’t proactive, this policy will only help those who need it the least

Natasha Porter OBE (@nporter_) 's Twitter Profile Photo

If this policy is to work, we desperately need a culture of education at the heart of the prison, with frontline staff recruited and trained to support those furthest from educational engagement and success, and then held to account for this.

Done badly this could bake in inequity even further, or just be based on good behaviour rather than rehabilitative activity which would be a real waste. But if government invests properly and prioritises delivering this well, I really do believe this could be a game changer.
