Every five years, a 1.3-million-gallon pond at the HAMMER Federal Training Center is drained, inspected and repaired. The pond is the primary water source for fire training. Hanford Mission Integration Solutions crews completed widespread maintenance, then refilled the pond.

Emergency preparedness is a key part of Hanford cleanup operations. Several organizations took part in last month’s limited exercise which involved a simulated accident and fire at the 222-S Lab. The alternate Emergency Operations Center was activated for this exercise.

Crews at Central Plateau Cleanup Company (CPCCo) have removed nearly 50% of the hazardous materials in parts of the Reduction-Oxidation Plant. The critical risk-reduction activity is preparing the former plutonium-processing facility for eventual demolition.

Coordinating with other DOE sites, WRPS saved ~ $600k on repurposed whole body contamination monitors. The monitors were no longer needed at the Nevada Test Site, so WRPS coordinated with HMIS to ship the monitors to Hanford. They will be tested and calibrated before used.

A look inside underground waste-storage Tank AP-106, where radioactive and chemical waste treated through the TSCR System enters. The system reached a milestone, treating 800k+ gallons of waste that will eventually go to the Vit Plant to be immobilized in glass for safe disposal.
