We now have 6% higher emissions than in 2015 Paris Agreement year. Emissions from coal now at record levels...we are fast using up the carbon budget for 1.5C Deforestation outpaces regrowth X2 with little change in global north #GCB2023 #COP28 GlobalCarbonProject Future Earth (@futureearth.bsky.social)

Carbon dioxide removal via reafforestation & afforestation isn't sufficient to even offset land use chnge emissions. This shows inadequacy of natural CDR. Novel CDR is tiny: no substitute for massive phase out & phase down of FF - what's really needed! #GCB2023 GlobalCarbonProject

Are we peaking carbon emissions yet? "This year the 1.1% global emissions incr is largely driven by China's COVID recovery. If next year China's emissions go down we could see a levelling next year" Pierre Friedlingstein GlobalCarbonProject #GCB2023 Future Earth (@futureearth.bsky.social) @ExeterUni #COP28

It's been a privilege and challenge to work on coordinating this statement completed in a day and a half at #COP28 with Future Earth (@futureearth.bsky.social) colleagues & World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) now with +100 signatures from climate change researchers, please see link to sign here:

How can a glacier go from this, to this, in only 7 years? Isn’t climate change a process that takes millennia to happen? Not if WE PUSH IT OVER THE THRESHOLD. In climate research this threshold is called tipping point and once it’s reached, there's probably no going back.

The Global stocktake assesses climate action to date and what needs to be done to avoid dangerous warming. Data from the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative have made a contribution to this important #Parisagreement process with global records for the Essential Climate Variables -

#COP28 needed to signal a hard stop to fossil fuels and their planet-burning pollution.   We didn’t turn the page on the #fossilfuel era, but this is clearly the beginning of the end. We must get on with the job of putting the Paris Agreement fully to work.

Tipping points pose a threat to society, and we need satellites to track and model them. What's the best type of sensor? That depends on which part of the climate system you are interested in. Read our perspective just out in NatureClimate tinyurl.com/58tdt2ze
