What a revelation #CéphaleEtProcris as good as a top Monteverdi opera (and they are very top) critics have written off #ElizabethJacquetDeLaGuerre but the miniscule forces of Ensemble OrQuesta proved them so wrong - better than overrated contemporary Lully, as tuneful as Rameau /1

but #CéphaleEtProcris more personal, tragic, intimate than Rameau, more Monteverdi in fact. Hats off to superbly versatile playing/singing Marcio May da Silva Ensemble OrQuesta for producing such a workable and sympathetic score, aptly minimal staging, choreography and lighting /2

Opera lives, with French baroque passion in deepest Dalston: the ever-adventurous Arcola Theatre grimeborn festival has a UK premiere of 18th-century opera by Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, inventively staged in a tiny space by Ensemble OrQuesta. Some superbly stylish singing.
