Today Oxford Brookes announced the closure of its Maths & Music departments, & that many colleagues in others are at risk of redundancies in a ridiculously short timeframe & insulting VS scheme: in English, History, Film, Anthropology, and more to come. All doing great research.

Helen Lovatt (@helenlovatt2) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The decision to close wholesale rather than invest and support is very shortsighted. In the long run, as lifelong education becomes more common, music and other arts will grow again.

The Arts and Humanities Alliance remains deeply concerned by news of proposed closures & redundancies in a number of our disciplines: languages and cultures University of Aberdeen Aberdeen Uni LLMVC and most recently the planned cuts to English, History, Film, & closure of Music Oxford Brookes

Arts and Humanities laundering? Impact-washing? Universities derive cultural capital from projects and departments that they subsequently cut. OBU using music for planning permission, then closing the department. completemusicupdate.com/oxford-brookes…

This is a v important report for Classics, UKHE and how we do EDI. Social class compounds other inequalities. Classics in partic has associations with elitism, despite much effort, but other arts and humanities have similar problems of access. workingclassclassics.uk/2024/02/25/uk-…

The sadness of Bacchylides. This time last year, I went to Kea, home of Simonides and his nephew Bacchylides. I’ve always had a soft spot for Bacch, and had never been to Kea before. Simonides has a monument in town. No mention of his nephew. 1/6

If people assume Latin is elitist and restrict it to Letitia environs then they prove themselves right. It’s boring. I’ve never had an issue getting all demographics interested in Latin (former school teacher and Classics Outreach Officer turned lecturer and disability advisor)
