Volunteers such as Helen do a fantastic amount of work checking on Commonwealth War Graves graves in their local churchyards and reporting any issues. Spring is in the air!

Volunteers needed to help maintain a chalk badge in #Wiltshire dating back to #WW1. The Map of Australia badge was carved into the hillside by Australian soldiers based at Hurdcott Camp, near the village of Compton Chamberlayne. Help us maintain this unique feature! #volunteers

The #WW1 chalk badge depicting the Map of #Australia having a tidy up in advance of #AnzacDay2025 The badge was carved into a Wiltshire hillside by Australian soldiers who were camped in the fields below. Nothing today remains of Hurdcott Camp except this chalk emblem.

A fantastic find just now - a new sketch map of Hurdcott Camp! Private Geoffrey Rose was at Hurdcott in 1917 and wrote his memoir in 1930 based on his war diaries. This map was drawn from memory but is remarkably accurate. His memoirs and diaries are held State Library of NSW

A real privilege to be part of a small tour group shown 'behind the scenes' at the latest excavations Pompeii Sites by Dr Sophie Hay today. Fascinating to hear Sophie discuss the findings and see the excavations in progress. How I wish I could spend more time here! Thanks Sophie!

In our quiet corner of #Wiltshire, UK we will remember the Australian soldiers, based at Hurdcott Camp, who carved Australia into the hillside during #WW1. They marked Anzac Day in 1917 as we do today. #AnzacDay2025

#AnzacDay2025 observed today in Wiltshire. Thousands of Australian soldiers spent time at Hurdcott Camp during #WW1, they carved the Map of Australia on the chalk downland above their camp, a memory of home. Many never made it back and are buried locally. We will remember them.

Lots of hard work by some of my Commonwealth War Graves volunteers at Avonview Cemetery in #Bristol today. We checked, photographed & cleaned or tidied every single war grave here, 140 of them. A mix of WW1 & WW2, with many private memorials in amongst the Commission headstones. Great work!

Can you help us by checking the condition of today's #WarMemorial case, #Kilmore - Sleat on the #IsleOfSkye. We'd really appreciate it if some photos and up-to-date information could be added to War Memorials Online at warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/145021

What a fab photo sent to me by one of my Commonwealth War Graves volunteers Anthony, who looks after war graves in #Wiltshire. A robin fledgling blending perfectly with its environment, sitting on a lichen covered headstone in Redlynch. Anthony looks after 4 war graves here, all dating to #WW1.
