Did you know? In the 1850s a series of brass band contests took place to near capacity crowds at The Piece Hall. The Piece Hall was also used as a backdrop for the 1996 Ewan McGregor film, Brassed Off, which was written and directed by our patron Mark Herman. 📷 Mark Herman

Aberystwyth closed their music department back in 1991. We will hear more today about cuts at Cardiff, while Bangor is vulnerable with low numbers, and wider cuts are being made there. If Cardiff and Bangor disappear, provision of music at HE level in Wales will be scarce. (1)

I spent the evening standing in the freezing cold, in a lay-by near Whitehaven #Cumbria. I doubt I'll ever witness anything more remarkable than a #murmuration. Stunning.

Of all the photographers’ work we’ve shared, Bill Brandt’s has always stood out for me. This poignant scene of children caught in a pocket of light against a dark, brooding industrial background has long been a personal favourite. Halifax, 1937 by Bill Brandt (1904-1983)

Good morning. Just an idea of the thought and trial and error that goes into our practice beyond or in addition to fingerings and bowings. My music sometimes looks like this but I avoid colored pencils! #music #practicing

I’ve just discovered that yesterday was the centenary of the genius that was Gerard Hoffnung (1925-1959). His cartoons still make me laugh as much as when I discovered them as a child. This website has many more, as well as audio links. Chapeau! gerardhoffnung.com/biography/

The inventor of the wireless radio telegraph, Guglielmo Marconi, believed that sound never died and it merely decayed past our hearing, and if he built a radio receiver strong enough he could recover words spoken from the past.
