The Reed Bunting breeding season is now drawing to an end and today we ringed two of the second broods we've been monitoring in the Thames floodplain. The number of pairs making second nesting attempts seems quite low this year - is this what other people find for Reed Buntings?

I don’t know which was more exciting over the weekend - moving house or seeing my first ever Hummingbird Hawk Moth! Ironically at the house we were leaving…Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre BC Upper Thames

First Redwing in the garden! Have often heard their “tseep” as they fly overhead (especially at night) or seen them in neighbouring trees, but this is my first proper garden record!

We started the year off with a fantastic bird ringing survey on a farm near the Thames yesterday. We caught 155 birds including 39 Yellowhammers, 12 Reed Buntings, 15 Greenfinches and a Marsh Tit. Quite a few of birds were already ringed, including a female Yellowhammer from 2019

Hello Elon Musk . Thanks for reinstating Michaela Strachan to @Twitter . I’m afraid the excellent BTO have now inexplicably disappeared . They are very important and well respected scientists and educators working to support critical conservation projects . Any chance . . . RT

This morning we were surveying birds on an organic farm that has been experimenting with minimum-tillage cultivation. Looks to be having a positive impact on the birdlife with 96 birds processed at the ringing site, including 4 Corn Buntings, 36 Yellowhammers and 13 Reed Buntings

Great to be able to track how these birds are doing and where they’re going. It’ll be nesting season before we know it!

Nice to hear from my former boss Andy Clements talking at the Natural England #NatureRecovery conference. Liked his msg that NE needs stronger, more diverse partnerships with data-gathering NGOs.

Finally saw a Dotted Beefly yesterday - never knowingly seen one as they’re usually zipping round too fast! With Dark-edged too. #BeeFlyWatch

Spells of poor weather have slightly hampered our ability to conduct bird ringing surveys on our study farms this winter. Therefore, it was great to get five ringing surveys completed over the last week. We ended the week with a total of 467 birds ringed and 79 recaptured.

We *do* need another report actually. You cant improve what you aren't measuring. Reports and action are not mutually exclusive, we need both
