Good news that surrendering the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is on hold. Ceding sovereign UK territory without the say of its people is wrong, plus the security importance of Diego Garcia is vital, especially with Mauritius close to China. Pause is not cancellation. Vigilance.

The pristine waters of the Chagos archipelago have been shamefully rendered murky by the politics of London, Port Louis, Washington and the UN ICJ. Incredible that in 2025 the sovereign rights of islanders have been denied by a government who should defend British interests.

When I chaired the Chagos parliamentary caucus I met with then Foreign Secretary Cameron warning of China expanding its Indian Ocean influence via Mauritius and denial of islander self-determination. Talks were halted given the security threat but now surrendered at damning cost.
