An unusual visitor to the garden this morning. Escaping all the guns in the area I suppose. Just love the markings on this bird. Don't normally get this close. Hope it invites some friends. BTO Garden BirdWatch RSPB Herefordshire Wildlife Trust HerefordshireBirds

1. As an ecologist with a growing fascination with breeding birds in the upland fringes of Herefordshire, Id like to spend this winter swatting up on some relevant research so that I’m well prepared for next spring. This image of the Ochlon fills me with excitement. HerefordshireBirds

So upset. They're ripping out the orchard behind us. All of the fieldfare and redwing had just arrived! Don't suppose we'll be seeing much of them going forward 😢 BTO Garden BirdWatch RSPB HerefordshireBirds

How exciting! Hereford Times and BBC News have both published articles on my LWS project, focusing on Daniel Webb remarkable find of breeding hawfinch @_Birder1 discovery of a tree sparrow colony and my find: a fragment of Celtic Temperate Rainforest.

A cold but pleasant walk around Walford, Herefordshire, today. Notable sightings include Ring-necked Duck, Goldeneye, Hawfinch, Mistle Thrush, and Little Grebe. I arrived home to find 2 Lesser Redpolls on my garden feeders. HerefordshireBirds Herefords Bird News

Well done Daniel Webb for once again showing me up on my patch Walford Pools by finding a Ring-necked duck, with long staying goldeneye still present! Chuffed to bits at how much the lakes have improved since being built, both for breeding and overwintering birds HerefordshireBirds

Join me on Thursday 23rd January for my online talk on farmland birds with Ben Andrews hosted by Herefordshire Wildlife Trust see link to join in bio!

Fantastic to attend the annual meeting of the LesserSpot Network, to learn about the mythical lesser spotted woodpecker. Already cooking up plans to increase survey coverage in Herefordshire, which may host a nationally significant population. HerefordshireBirds

Just received - This Black Kite was a very near miss at 4pm on Sunday over Hope Mansell, Herefordshire, so close you could smell it. If you are in the Forest or at New Fancy View or just see a kite look hard. Seen & photographed by James Leighton. HerefordshireBirds #GlosBirds

At least three singing willow warblers in this scrubby area down at Wilton. One of the best sounds in Britain, straight out of a Constable painting HerefordshireBirds Herefordshire Wildlife Trust

I love sticking up for underrated bird species, and one of those is the lovely stock dove; a classic farmland and woodland edge species that nests in tree hollows. Always a treat to have one of these pretty birds in my garden HerefordshireBirds #farmlandbirds

Snapshot of Constables England at Hatfield this morning: ancient Alder woodland rich in flora, wood pasture with belting redstarts, low intensity arable full of linnet, skylarks, yammers, l whitethroat. There is hope! HerefordshireBirds Herefordshire Wildlife Trust

Fantastic to see 4 singing wood warblers this morning in South Herefordshire. A very special bird that really needs our help! HerefordshireBirds

Seems to be a fantastic year for redstarts; two singing in the ancient parkland of Pengethley Grove. Not normally an easy bird to find in the Ross area. Lots of stock dove, mistle thrust and a lesser whitethroat HerefordshireBirds National Trust
