I #WearOrange for Arielle and Brian who were shot and killed in a mass shooting at Michigan State, as well as the hundreds of Michiganders who are shot and killed each year. While we still have a long road ahead, I’m hopeful that we can build a future free from gun violence.

It was a blast getting to talk with 4th and 5th graders at Princeton Elementary recently about what my job as a State Senator is like. We talked about everything from the many different pathways people take to running for office to the policies we're working on to support them

Melissa's son Jace was born with only half a heart. It's because of Medicaid that he's able to learn and play alongside his classmates. Cutting Medicaid will mean cutting special care services for Jace and others who depend on them for a shot at living a normal, healthy life.

If I had to pick between protecting the health of kids like Jace or giving tax breaks to billionaires… I’d pick Jace every time.

As chaos continues to come out of Washington with Congress advancing cuts to Medicaid, we’re using our power at the state level to examine the impact these cuts will have on families. Learn more about this work and our other recent legislative efforts 👇 senatedems.com/hertel/2025/06…

Those in closest proximity to the problem are often those closest to the solutions. That's why, during #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth, I brought together a coalition of folks — survivors, parents, students, educators, law enforcement officers, community organizers, faith leaders, and

Even with the beautiful weather, we had a great turnout at our coffee hour in Chesterfield recently! Thank you to everyone who sacrificed an hour of sunshine to sit and chat about issues facing our community and the solutions we’re working on implementing up in Lansing.

Today we welcomed some of our summer district interns to the Michigan Capitol. This great group of students is doing critical work, helping up make connections with folks throughout our lakeshore community. It was great getting to give them some insight into the legislative side.

There’s no shortage of things to be concerned about right now, but if there’s something we can be of help with, please reach out. Whether we can lend a listening ear or sort out troubles you’re experiencing with a state department — we’re here to help.

Before the Algonac Lions Parade on Sunday, Mayor Gillis showed me the progress they're making on the city pool we helped secured a grant for in our last state budget. I'm looking forward to this new community asset opening soon — I can't wait to jump in!

After devastating communities for years, Michigan opioid overdose deaths are finally steadily declining. And with my legislation the Senate passed last week, we can continue building on this work and ensuring help is available when and where it’s needed. michiganindependent.com/health-care/op…

Lake St. Clair offers so much to our community — from clean drinking water and unmatched recreational opportunities to economic growth. In the Michigan Senate, I’ll continue fighting to protect this resource for generations to come.

We need fewer barriers, more access to care, and stronger tools to prevent overdose deaths. My bipartisan legislation seeks to achieve that so that those struggling with addiction can access the support services they need to achieve recovery. macombdaily.com/2025/07/20/sta…
