Shade. 10pm, setting up electric fenced paddocks under this mature oak. In field trees like this are priceless. Temperatures are forecast up to 30c over the next two days. By law I must provide shade at 32; it’s wise to do so beforehand.

An upland meadow in England. Taking a drink from the mobile water trough. I’m stood in the paddock the cattle were in earlier today. There are lots of leaves leftover to capture the energy of the sun. Eat red meat and animal fat; buy the best you can.

Greater birds foot trefoil. Taller than the related BFT. Both fix nitrogen (from the air we breathe) in soil that later becomes available to other plants.

Bracken cut. A perfect spell of weather for wilting the cut leaves. It’ll help the pasture plants see the sun. Taller plants mean deeper roots, improving soil with more space for air and water.

It’s surprising that more farms don’t manage bracken… Overtime there’s pasture to be gained. Working in blocks, I’ll cut at a foot above the surface to preserve the plants and little critters.

A quick patrol of the new orchard. This first fruiting season, any apples etc will be picked at an early stage - I want the trees to develop strong roots over fruit. The yellow flower is birds foot trefoil - it grows naturally in the right conditions and makes nitrogen from the

Come for a walk with him… At the lowest part of the farm, near the river. The cattle will graze this over the summer, then it’ll rest again. Spotted a few deer in the tall plants; habitat, improving soil and food. Love it.
