The ICRC to AfricanUnion briefed African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security on the humanitarian situation across Africa, calling for an urgent action to uphold #IHL, #Safeguard #Humanitarian #Space, and #ProtectCivilians. Member States were also urged to join the Global #IHL Initiative.

The #GenevaConventions turn 76 today. Adopted in 1949 and universally ratified, the four conventions are the backbone of international humanitarian law (IHL). They protect those not or no longer participating in armed conflicts, save lives, and reduce suffering.

Today, ICRC to AfricanUnion marked #WorldHumanitarianDay with partners. Even amid rising attacks, humanitarian workers remain unwavering in their mission to save lives. A powerful reminder: the rules of war protect them, and we must all ensure they are respected.

On the margins of #TICAD9, ICRC's Vice President Gilles Carbonnier met with the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia Hadera Abera Admassu to discuss ways to further strengthen commitment to IHL and enhance humanitarian operations across the country.
