11 July 1804 - On this day, Vice President Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton during a dawn duel following years of rivalry. Burr shot Hamilton in the abdomen, while the return flew above Burr. Hamilton died the following day and Burr’s career never recovered.

12 July 1801 - On this day, a Royal Navy squadron pursued and defeated a larger Spanish-French fleet at the Second Battle of Algerciras. As darkness fell, and the fastest British ships caught up with the enemy, confusion spread and Spanish and French ships fired on each other.

18 July 1942 - on this day, the first German jet fighter (ME-262) had its first test flight under jet power. This was nine months ahead of the British Gloster Meteor. However, the jet exhaust deflected off the runway, causing turbulence and preventing the elevators from working.
