Hot off the press at The ISME Journal: Nitrospira use & rely on atmospheric H2. Shown for N. moscoviensis (lin. II) but group 2a hydrogenases occur also in lin. I (from WWTPs) & lin. IV (marine). Thanks for super collaboration! Chris Greening @anne_daebeler Bob Leung & all coauthors!

In nature today (open access), we report the structural and mechanistic basis of how bacteria harvest energy from air. We reveal a novel enzyme, Huc, consumes atmospheric levels of hydrogen gas and transfers the derived electrons for aerobic respiration. nature.com/articles/s4158…
