Margaret Bourke-White made some of the first photos that showed Americans the horrors of the Holocaust. She accompanied American troops as they liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945. What she witnessed made her ashamed to "be a member of the human race."

The Allies discovered one of the greatest thefts in history #OTD in 1945: paintings, gold, and more hidden in a salt mine. The Nazi plot to strip Jews of art and even objects of little financial value was a sign of their greater ambition—to destroy them and erase their history.

In 1941, three brothers—Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski—formed a partisan group in the swampy forest of German-occupied Poland (today Belarus). During the war, they not only fought against the Nazis, but created a thriving community and saved some 1,200 of their fellow Jews.

Soccer may have saved Ignaz Feldmann's life. An SS officer recognized the Jewish professional soccer player and gave Ignaz a less grueling work assignment. Ignaz was liberated at the Ohrdruf camp and later used his English skills to act as General Eisenhower's guide.

This photo of Leo Weissman’s family during Passover in Germany in 1937 was one of his “greatest treasures.” Passover, a Jewish holiday that marks the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt, begins tonight. Leo survived five camps and prisons during the Holocaust.
