Students spent last Friday extracting and debarking a number of felled ash and beech tree forks. The forks were then relocated to the big shed to be 3D scanned, notated, and prepped for assembly. #forestry #treeforks #tacitknowledge #AAschool #timberconstruction #naturalforms

"Crematorium" attends to the primordial desire for ceremony and remembrance. A shroud-like structure draped across a fallen beech draws matter in and out of visibility while a haze emanates from the forest floor. Work by Garrett Nelli, MSc 22 #aaschool #longexposure

A lot of planning went into lifting a 24 m² space frame 3 meters high, all within the tight dimensions of the aaschool New Courtyard. A pair of genie lifts and acrow props made the difficult task look rather easy, and installation went safely and smoothly.

Meet Wyatt, the new Architectural Robotics Developer at @hookepark. Wyatt was a D+M MArch 20' graduate who assisted in the design of the Woodland Cabin. His familiarity with the program and high-level technical abilities make him a perfect addition to the Hooke Park staff.

The FIELDSTATION prototype has been deconstructed and safely returned to @Hookepark for reuse in the final build. The total disassembly took less than 7 hours and is a testament to the student's ambitions for a modular, adaptable, and kit-of-parts design. #modular #timelapse

Hooke Park has recently updated the robotic cell with a new 3D camera. This stereoscopic structured light camera offers instantaneous object recognition for precise robotic milling, furthering the Design + Make commitment to designing with the natural geometries of the forest.

The robotics workflow is in full swing at Hooke Park. 256 roundwood pieces varying in diameter of 50-90mm will be cut utilizing our Kuka KR 150 with a pneumatic gripper and paired with a machine vision system.

A log shoot was added to the robotics workflow to minimize entering the cell. Still, a light nudge from the KUKA may be required. #KUKA #fabrication #Process

With an out-of-commission router, students had to get creative in scribing cut patterns on tree forks. A calligraphy brush was used and, after some calibration, produced some wonderful hieroglyphic-esque markings. Cuts will be made by hand - a unique digital to analog workflow.

Over the past month, the MSc and MArch students have been working hard constructing a new facility at Hooke Park, the FIELDSTATION. This public infrastructure will serve as a satellite woodland workspace and shelter for AA students, staff, and visiting academics.

Congratulations to the graduating Design + Make MSc cohort! The group of 7 and their 3 MArch colleagues filled the big shed with physical models and 1:1 prototypes for the final jury. The day involved a site walk to the FIELDSTATION site, presentations, and lively conversation.

The 5th iteration of the FIELDSTATION space frame required greater specificity to maximize its structural capabilities and spanning potential. This led to the design of 6 unique nodal connections depending on loading requirements and position in relation to vertical supports.
