I wish more young pitchers understood the need for 21 outs per game, they don’t have to be strike outs. Great pitchers get those out even when they don’t have their best stuff in games. Game changer and other similar apps seem to put too much emphasis on stats.

It’s really unfortunate that so many girls do not factor in where they will continue to improve as a pitcher when making their college decision. A scholarship doesn’t mean she should stop trying to get better, quite the opposite actually.

It's doubtful this is what the NCAA had in mind when they adopted both NIL and transfer portal policies. Mark my words, the next chapter in all of this will be coaches wanting recruits to sign multi-year deals before they sign. That's the only logical next step in all this.

It’s amazing how many coaches and teams want a great pitcher on their team but so few coaches are willing to go through the growing pains necessary to develop her into that greatness. Unless the coach’s kid is the pitcher, they tend to get more leeway to develop. Sad.

A lot of pitchers going into Colorado this week will learn the hard way how important the dropball is. Quite often the CO thin air forces pitchers to adjust their game strategy because, the majority of HR's this week will be off riseballs. Play the % and keep the ball down!

Could you imagine telling someone that in 25 years the top 3 pitchers in women’s softball would all be from the Midwest, none from California? Bahl, Canaday, and Kavan all grew up about 2-2.5 hrs apart. I think this shows the teams, pitchers and coaching are catching up to CA!

Softball tryout season is right round the corner for most. Be sure to ask in advance because there are clubs who REQUIRE you to see their pitching coach to play there. This can be good and bad, depending on the coach. But some clubs do not make this optional. Be sure to ask.

NCAA softball coaches like to say how much they love kids to be “multi-sport” athletes. And too many of those kids take that to an extreme. So while you play another sport over winter, taking 6 months off pitching, the kid who’s working harder may get the softball offer instead.

It's ironic that in my entire life pitching softball, and the experience I gained within those decades, is what also disqualifies me for various college jobs who require a degree, including assist coaches. A diploma is more important to athletic depts than actual experience. SMH

There seems to be a lot of D1 coaches and programs who feel they are bigger than the game. Some never had time to reply to emails I sent them about various things, suddenly want to text or email me about pitcher they wanna recruit. I wish I could tell them off.

Don’t spend a second worrying about fall season wins/loses. If you throw a good riseball use the fall to work on your dropball. If you have a good drop use the fall to work on your rise. Those pitches need to complement each other. ALWAYS be working on your change-up. Always.

Be aware that there are bogus emails purporting to be sent from ISC President Chris Santos, asking for help and gift cards. These are "phishing attempts" Neither the ISC, nor Chris Santos will ever contact you asking for financial help. Please see more at iscfastpitch.com/beware-of-phis…

Hitters who try hitting a HR rarely ever hit one. It’s when they’re relaxed at the plate that they get the best results. In pitching it’s the same thing for K’s. Don’t force yourself to get 21 K’s, instead focus on 21 outs. The K’s will ultimately come but 21 outs is the goal.

I'm not a fan of using a football to work on the riseball. The #1 enemy of the rise is bullet spin, which is caused by turning the wrist at the release. Throwing a football underhand with a spiral requires the wrist to turn, which is the opposite of what is needed for backspin.

Teaching a young pitcher that the dropball is more important than the riseball can be a real challenge. While both pitches should compliment each other when used correctly, it doesn't change this fact: Riseballs win you games, dropballs win you championships.

The fastest pitchers in the world are also rarely the best pitchers in the world. Remember that as you go into your offseason workouts. Speed is good, and it’s nice to set goals. But learning to control your movement pitches will take you further than simply throwing fast.
