Ontario has the lowest costs for hip replacements. Why would the Ford government move to much more expensive for-profit hip surgeries? To allow the wealthiest Ontarians to bypass wait lists. Costs will balloon & wait lists will grow but the most affluent will buy speedy access.

Real infrastructure projects would be to upgrade ventilation and air filtration systems in every public building and to radically expand public transit in Ontario. This project is dangerous, fantastically expensive and fuels climate change. globalnews.ca/news/11315432/…

As the easiest hip replacement surgeries ramp up in for-profit clinics, physicians, nurses & other staff will gravitate from hospitals. Waits for more complex surgeries in hospitals and wait times overall will grow. Costs will balloon. Terrible public policy.

Ontario has the fewest nurses to patients of any province or the UK. A UK study found hospitals with the worst staffing had patient death rates 26 pc higher. A major study released today calls for minimum nurse- patient ratios in Ontario, in place in BC. ochu.on.ca/wp-content/upl…

Every shift in Ontario’s understaffed hospitals forces nurses to make an impossible choice: who gets treatment & who doesn’t. “I struggle to get up, I’m so mentally drained,” RN Rachel Fleming tells us, warning patients will die if the Ford gov’t doesn’t mandate staffing ratios.

Every additional patient added to a nurse’s workload is associated with a 7% increase in patient deaths. This happens to most nurses, every shift, in an Ontario hospital. The cost of Ontario’s lowest level of nurse staffing: the preventable deaths of thousands of patients.

Air Canada settled with its pilots and won’t engage with its exploited flight attendants, almost all women. It counts on the federal government taking away their right to strike. That would be a historic miscalculation for the Liberals.

CIHI reports 9 million overtime hours worked by nurses in Ontario hospitals last year. 16,000 vacancies can't be filled. Nurse-patient ratios can bring back the 16,500 nurses who are registered & not practicing. They just need to believe they can provide good, safe patient care.

Minister Hajdu rejects the notion that siding with Air Canada and stripping these women of their right to strike makes her government anti-union. She acts in the proud tradition of Mackenzie King, servant of the railroad barons. These workers will fight and they will win.
