In 2014, Gawre’s life changed forever. Her husband and 4 sons went missing. She raised her children alone, waiting ... hoping. The pain endures, as it does for thousands of families still searching for their loved ones in Iraq.

During 2024, ICRC in Iraq exchanged 10,450 Red Cross Messages between separated family members. Families submitted requests to locate 1,558 missing relatives. The fate and whereabouts of 343 missing persons were clarified.

📍Erbil, Iraq On 8 May 2025, the Ministry of Peshmerga & ICRC have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote IHL , organize trainings for Peshmerga forces, & strengthen civilian protection during conflicts— demonstrating a commitment to humanitarian principles.

The families of missing persons suffer immense psychological pain and grief, which continues to grow over time. Therefore, the ICRC in #Iraq works to search for individuals who have been separated from one another due to armed conflicts.

Omran Ibraheem, a father of 6 from Mosul. He lost a leg to a landmine in 2013 while clearing mines. Despite the trauma, he earned a Business Administration degree in 2022. “I'm grateful I finally found proper treatment,” he says at the ICRC rehab centre in Erbil, #Iraq.

Hamza Younis, a 69-year-old former soldier from Erbil, #Iraq, lost his leg during heavy shelling in 1982. For over 20 years, he has been receiving free physical rehabilitation at the ICRC physical rehabilitation centre in Erbil.

Abu Talib waited years for news of his missing son. “Even birds grieve the loss of their young,” he says. One day, he received a Red Cross Message from the ICRC: “Talib is alive.” Many families carry invisible wounds, yet they never lose hope of finding their missing loved ones.

In Baghdad, the ICRC held a workshop for 12 members of #Iraq’s Ministry of Defence وزارة الدفاع العراقية, at the Human Rights Directorate, to promote the understanding of IHL. Topics included the Geneva Conventions, limits on weapons use, & ways to uphold IHL during armed conflicts.
