Civilians must be protected and respected, always. Parties to conflicts are the only ones with enough power to enforce the rules of war, transform them into reality, and save lives.

MRC, in partnership with ICRC New Delhi, conducted a Training on the Management of the Deceased (MotD) for First Responders. Participants from across MRC units, NDMA Maldives & Maldives Police gained skills on management of the deceased during emergencies & disasters & related forensic aspects.

Over 120 armed conflicts are happening in the world, and millions of civilians are suffering the humanitarian consequences of them. Respecting the rules of war is not an option: it is an obligation of all parties to armed conflicts.

On June 24th 1859, Henry Dunant saw the horrors of the Battle of Solferino. This inspired him to propose a treaty for armies to care for wounded soldiers & create national societies to support military medical services. In 1863, he co-founded the Int. Committee of the Red Cross

All parties involved in armed conflicts, whether it is a non-state armed group or a state, must protect civilians and civilian objects without excuses. Civilians shouldn't bear the cost of the hostilities.

The bodies of the dead must be handled with respect, and their dignity protected. Not following these legal obligations and standards in armed conflicts can increase the number of missing people and prolong the suffering of the families. #IHL
