Our stochastic model elucidates a mechanism of evolution that can also account for counterintuitive phenomena such as the spread of altruistic strategies. Altruism, apparently disadvantageous, can win thanks to an intriguing stochastic effect that we characterize mathematically.

We predict a clonal wave of advance of mitochondrial mutants, recapitulating experimental observations in skeletal muscle fibres affected by sarcopenia. This new mechanistic understanding allows principled suggestion of therapies that might slow down skeletal muscles aging.
