An austere place perhaps, withdrawn, some might say desolate. But silence compels. It is very old silence. The wilderness is here. To me the wilderness is not a place. It is the indefinable essence or spirit that lives in place. 📖 On the Essex Coast, J A Baker 📸 Mundon, Essex

Still one of my favourite finds from #Roman Britain - the Silchester Eagle, dated to the C1st-2nd AD, & discovered in 1866. It was once thought to be a legionary eagle (inspiring Sutcliff's "The Eagle of the Ninth"), but was more likely part of a bigger statue #FindsFriday

Sadly overlooked Harlow Roman Temple must easily be the top ancient ruin in an Essex industrial estate #ClassicsTwitter #ClassicsTwitter youtu.be/nqyRp13NUGI

I used to work here. It's amazing to stand at the side of the road and picture the traffic, trade and daily pottering about.

Syrian archaeologist Khaled Al Asaad. He gave 50 years to Palmyra and was beheaded 6 years ago today for cultural heritage to which he devoted his life. Despite all tortures of ISIS, he did not tell the location of the artifacts and today that city is free from terrorists.

A student of mine once asked about studying Classics at a UCAS fair. She was aerily dismissed and told "it wasn't for her" because she didn't have Latin A-Level. She walked away crushed and resentful.
