For those of you outside of academia, this would be like the Chiefs letting go of Maholmes after taking the team to the AFC Championship every year. If that sounds unbelievably brain dead, you haven’t met the bureaucrats who run some of these universities.

The progressive left tells you the 1950s were better, as labor unions were stronger and tax rates were over 90 percent. The MAGA right tells you the 1950s were better, as labor unions were stronger and Harriet was still a tradwife to Ozzie. Both are just wrong. Our politics today

In this recent article JLEO article, Ali Palida and I show how information protocols act as infrastructure for managing knowledge commons. Kafkaesque institutions are not inevitable but carefully designed communication protocols are critical to avoiding this challenge.

Agree - the anonymous letter writers should be ashamed. But they won't be because they believe universities should be about advocacy and activism rather than constructive discussions and dialogue. Fortunately, it's a rather small list of signatories.

Mark Cuban: "I think AI will give superpowers to not just companies, but any employee willing to learn how to put it to use. It can take your newest employee and, with some curiosity and effort, make them as accomplished as long-term employees that won’t use AI."

I would say the last three categories - lack of ideological diversity of students, staff, and DEI programming - are a much greater threat to academic freedom than the government. Harvard had the lowest ratings for academic freedom before Trump for good reason.

Great to see acknowledgment of the challenges of access. Still, MIT's OpenCourseware - with essentially entire curricula freely available - is what we should all strive for. ocw.mit.edu Also, GenAI can summarize all these books! It's an equalizer too.
