Little penguins are, well... the littlest of the penguins alive today. They are about the same weight as a pineapple & their average dive time is... about 20 seconds. In te reo Māori, they are called kororā. #PenguinAwarenessDay Pic Phillip Island Nature Parks

Royal penguins are confined to Macquarie Island and nearby Bishop and Clerk Islands, in Australia. The species was heavily exploited (for their oil) in the 19th century, but has recovered since. They like to dine on krill, fish & squid. #PenguinAwarenessDay Pic IUCN PSG

The global population of African penguins is ~25,000 pairs - a decrease from >1.5 million pairs 100 years ago. This fast decline is primarily caused by less prey availability due to climate change & fisheries competition. #PenguinAwarenessDay Pic IUCN PSG

Chinstrap penguins are (Antarctic) krill lovers, but it will also take fish and other crustaceans they pursue at depths of 70 m. They breed on rocky coasts in ice-free areas in Antarctica & sub-Antarctic islands. #PenguinAwarenessDay Pic M LaRue

When it becomes too windy, #penguins will lay down tail facing the wind to protect themselves. That's why you may see them all looking in the same direction like here with the Chinstraps of Orne Harbour #FunFactFriday #PenguinResearch #CitizenScience #Antarctica

African penguin was officially listed as “Critically Endangered” on the IUCN Red List -the first penguin species to reach this status. It will help us IUCN Penguin SG gain stronger protection but heartbreaking to see them a step away from extinction in the wild Dr. Michelle LaRue

African penguins driven to Critically Endangered status on the IUCN Red List by rapid population declines as result of food scarcity, climate change, depleted fish stocks and competition with commercial fisheries. Immediate action must be taken to protect their food sources

We urge the South African government to prioritise sustainable food access for now *Critically Endangered* African penguins on the IUCN Red List. The science is clear, and so is the need for action iucnredlist.org/species/226978… #AfricanPenguin #Conservation #IUCN #IUCNssc #Environmentza
