Fake rigor is rampant. There is a certain "color by numbers" approach today that tries to reduce scientific criticism to formulas (statistics checklists, dot plots, "what about in vivo?", etc.). Stock criticisms undermine the enterprise in many ways.

A lots of the unhappiness that (middle class, white male) academics have with the current academia is that we keep insisting on doing what think the job should be, rather than what the people that draw up our contracts and pay our salaries tell us it is.
