Despite growing evidence on the catastrophic consequences of #nuclear weapons, we observe 2 alarming trends: 1⃣deterrence theories regaining vigor & appeal, despite tremendous risks& unproved benefits. 2⃣ use of tactical NW normalized in military planning, politics &media.

Reminder: The ##Hiroshima bomb had a yield of 15 kilotons, which today would fall within the category of #tactical #nuclear weapons. It killed 140,000 people.

Measures to reduce nuclear risks are urgently needed: ▶️substantive reductions in nuclear arsenals ▶️freezing of modernization efforts ▶️unequivocal commitments never to use nuclear weapons first ▶️removal from high operational alert ▶️reduced role in security policies. #NPT2023
