Great day out in Enniskillen with some of our participants on the Bad Bridget book club. The visit to the Workhouse was very poignant and evoked much empathetic thought. Very well put together. Children’s shoes so moving. Thanks Frankie and Pauline

This nightmarish vision was produced in response to the new 1834 Poor Law, Poor relief was now only supplied within the workhouse, where families were split up into gender-divided wards; in return for their relief paupers would carry out several hours of often gruelling labour.

This is an extraordinary story, so sensitively told. Through the survival of a letter in an archive, you learn of one woman’s plight after her family sent her to the workhouse. Sadly, there is no happy ending for Catherine. Letter From a ā€˜Lunatic’ digupyourancestors.com/2024/02/18/let…
