At a mtg last yr Larry Lee, CEO @SacObsernewspaper (60-year old Black newspaper) shared that his org quadrupled their staff size in just 16 mos. The Knight Foundation event was focused on sustainability. Attendees stood and clapped. I had tears in my eyes. Everyone wanted to know how.

Larry diversified his revenue in many ways: philanthropic funding of journalism, branded content, reader revenue & more. “The Press is the only private sector institution called out in the constitution,” says Jessica Rosenworcel at the Knight Foundation #KMF23 meeting. She says she understands then that journalism is fundamentally important to the country and news deserts are concerning problems for democracy.
