We are in a moment of moral clarity. In 20 yrs my kids will ask me what I did or did not do. I choose shared humanity, which includes factoring in systemic injustice, and is clear on the absolute sanctity of human life. Or it could all be swept under the rug.

So, a little public service message. Influenza is hitting hard this year. Infact, over 60% of my unit is patients on ventilators from influenza pneumonia or bacterial secondary infections after influenza. The major circulating strain is H1N1 which is included in this years shot.

Well, the low vaccination rate here in AB (lowest in many years apparently) and the highest in years hospitalization rate for influenza are a matched set of badness. We can improve things - if you haven’t, still get vaccinated so it isn’t WORSE. It’s alarming there was 1/

As a new Emergency Medicine attending 10 years ago I was asked to write about my insights into what it's like to be an ER Doctor. I just randomly came across it and after all these years I'm amazed by how much this all still rings true in my heart today. So I wanted to share it

There is no greater cause of emotional distress than having to apologize for a situation you neither caused nor have the resources to rectify. This sits firmly upon the shoulders of our provincial government.

This kind of moral distress (for pts and HCWs) is a regular occurrence… the examples just don’t get shared w the press… It’s truly heartbreaking… HCWs aren’t exaggerating when we say we need action ASAP theglobeandmail.com/canada/alberta…

Last year in Edmonton, 302 homeless people died. That's up eight times what it was pre-pandemic (37 in 2019). It's part of an overall alarming increase in homeless deaths across Alberta (124 in 2019 to 787 in 2023). cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…

The fabric of our healthcare system is built on its people - and it's being pulled apart. Read the stories of Kari. Paula. Kris. Lisa. Vanessa. Charlotte to understand why. Treating workers as widgets isn't working out. Healthy Debate #StitchedTogether healthydebate.ca/stitched-toget…

So excited to meet 𝙹𝚘𝚎 𝚅𝚒𝚙𝚘𝚗𝚍 [email protected] ❤️ this pic - the 1st land based learning session CAEP & I would say the first time MDs got CME credit (The Royal College The College of Family Physicians of Canada) for participating in one aspect of our health system. Huge thanks to JK for doing a lot of the lifting.

This would not have happened without the generosity of our knowledge holders and Elders who came to support and teach the docs - I am grateful for their kindness to share about who we are as Nehiyawak and what keeps us healthy. This is only one small portion of our health system.

I hope this helps open the door to Medicine actually learning about Indigenous Health vs perpetuating Indigenous sickness, and creating more opportunities like this. We need allies to uplift and help us rebuild our own Indigenous medical systems. #allyship #HonouringTreaties
