Unfortunately, New York is stuck with closed primaries for the foreseeable future. A top-two electoral system would have encouraged future elected officials to appeal to a broader, more representative electorate, both in office and on future campaign trails.

Electricity demand around 5pm was close to the annual peak in NYC (over 10,400 MW). To keep the lights on, the grid relies on older, less efficient (and more costly) "peaker plants" (mostly in NYC). This brown line shows many of them (oil and diesel plants) firing up.

The Ninth Circuit ruled that Oregon can’t deny adoption placements for prospective parents who refuse to affirm a child’s preferred gender identity. It’s a win for parental rights and religious liberty, John Ketcham and Colin Wright write.

I’m thrilled to have joined John Ketcham on this important piece about a major win for parental rights and religious liberty in Oregon. Last week, the Ninth Circuit ruled the state can’t deny adoptions to parents who won’t promise to affirm a child’s cross-sex "gender identity."

“Detective Didarul Islam, Aland Etienne, Wesley LePatner, and Julia Hyman embodied the qualities that make New York great. A little of their city is buried with them.” John Ketcham’s tribute to the victims of last week’s shooting is precisely where attention should be: on them.

Federal hiring is broken. It can take years to get a job, the pay scales are too rigid, you can't promote a rockstar, and you can't fire a dud. Today on Statecraft, Judge Glock asks: What if we just copy what the states already do? statecraft.pub/p/how-to-fix-g…

Here’s a dilemma for those of us who want NYC to build much more housing. Yes, the city’s ambitious rezoning of Midtown South that will allow (in theory!) for more homes. For that to happen, however, projects need to pencil out, i.e., they need to be economically feasible. So

Such a great way to cap off a week that marked my 10-year anniversary at the Manhattan Institute. So grateful to be part of a team that will literally burn a Friday night just to show support for a colleague. 💪🏽💪🏽

Can the next mayor freeze the rent for NYC's 1M rent-regulated apartments? You can pack the Rent Guidelines Board with people you expect to reach a predetermined conclusion. But as Christian Browne explains, that's just the beginning. city-journal.org/article/zohran…
