The 2025 National Famine Commemoration Ceremony was held at Kilmallock Famine Memorial Park in Limerick on 17 May. Invited by Minister O’Donovan, Ambassador Shimada & his wife joined the services in memory of those who suffered & died during the Great Famine in the 19th century.

Finally, Oona met Myaku-Myaku! Oona is Ireland’s mascot for #expo2025. She is a young Atlantic Puffin and the star of Cartoon Saloon Puffin Rock @puffin_rock_official 😊☘

On 21 May, Ambassador Shimada met with the former Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, Lt. Gen. Sean Clancy, who will become Chair of the European Union Military Committee in Brussels & the new Chief of Staff, Brig. Gen. Rosa Mulkahy on the Belgian frigate, Louise Marie.

Ambassador Shimada and his wife Kaoru recently welcomed Mr Paul Kavanagh, former Irish Ambassador to Japan, and his wife Mrs Rosemary Kavanagh to the Ambassador’s residence. They exchanged frank views on the future of Japan-Ireland relations.

On 17 June Ambassador Shimada and his wife Kaoru welcomed members of the Ireland Japan Association to their residence. Mrs Shimada demonstrated Japanese tea ceremony, sado/chado. While enjoying Japan’s rich culture, they discussed education, culture, and business for the future.

Ambassador Shimada and Mrs. Shimada recently welcomed students from the UCD Summer Camp programme to their residence. Mrs Shimada demonstrated Chado/Sado (tea ceremony), and the students enjoyed this authentic Japanese cultural experience. 🇯🇵🇮🇪

On 18 June Ambassador Shimada and his wife attended the Irish Defence Forces Summer Reception in the McKee Barracks. They greeted the new chief of staff designate, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, and his wife and congratulated Lieutenant General Mulcahy on his appointment.

Ambassador Shimada and his wife Kaoru visited Joseph Walsh Studio in Cork and enjoyed a studio & workshop tour. Mr Walsh, Ireland’s most famous designer explained how he made the amazing Magnus Rinn. You can see it at Ireland Pavilion in EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai until mid-October!
