A principle should be that benefit levels relate to the cost of what it is contributing towards. Multiple freezes to LHA means renters in need of support are hostages to rent inflation in their area, and as Joseph Elliott shows, rates across the piece are hopefully out of kilter.

The Renters' Rights Bill has been APPROVED by the House of Commons! This is the final step before the Bill receives Royal Assent, which we expect shortly. No more amendments, no more debate - renters' rights are coming.

Sky-high rents and a lack of support from Local Housing Allowance mean that people are struggling to find safe and healthy homes. And we see that families are having to make impossible decisions between whether to pay rent or put food on the table 💔

These figures are indefensible. Although the Renters' Rights Act will make a huge difference to renters' lives, those who are worst off still don't have enough to live on. Rachel Reeves should commit to unfreezing Local Housing Allowance in next month's Budget.

🚨New deprivation data reveals continual deep regional divides across many areas in England. Deprivation is concentrated in many northern and midlands towns and coastal areas, where manufacturing and tourism industries have been lost.

Since then, private rents are up by around 20% on average, as this chart from Lead Analyst Joseph Elliott sets out. Our cost of living tracker also showed more than 3/4 of low-income private renters receiving LHA in the last year went without essentials. x.com/J_Elliott94/st…

Bold new energy policy idea from JRF colleagues here ⬇️ Everyone gets a universal, essential block of energy at a discounted rate, and after this usage costs revert back to market rates - with some carveouts for those less able to pay.
