The main reasons for this are intermarriage and Jews having relatively low fertility. There were ~16 million Jews pre-Holocaust. If Jews = Halakhic Jews, you get 15.2 million. If Jews = Having one Jewish parent, you get 20 million.

Chaim Weizmann in 1949 - paraphrased: "The Egyptians stomped in, destroyed our villages, ruined our wells and irrigation systems, and bombed our cities. Then when we tried to show them the door, the British Empire comes in and says "hey how dare you hurt my baby!?"

US-UK Discussion in 1949 on peace in Palestine. The Arabs refused to speak directly to the Jews, and the Jews would only engage with the Arabs directly. How can you have peace with somebody if you're unwilling to address them directly?

The French Consul General in 1949 noted that there was a strong likelihood that the British were discouraging Egypt and Jordan from reaching an Agreement with Israel. Britain wanted an Arab Negev. PGI = Provisional Government of Israel.

As early as 1950, Congressmen were complaining about State Department inaction vis-a-vis Israel and insisting that the US could only rely upon Israel in the middle east. Also, the UK was arming the Arabs States as Washington tried to be impartial.
