In a new working paper, Jacobus Cilliers, Nour Elashmawy & I look at the use of PDS Lasso for selecting control variables in field experiments. This is an issue that in part came up through discussions a while back on Twitter, 1/5 blogs.worldbank.org/en/impactevalu…

A new paper by researchers at Stanford takes on both the question of whether we are adapting to climate change and, indirectly, how we should measure such adaptation. A. Patrick Behrer explains in today's blog. blogs.worldbank.org/en/impactevalu…

Well-designed programmes with prior evidence of success often fail when scaled up by government. ⤵️ Discover how we identify and test for a low-cost way to improve the implementation of a school governance reform programme in Tanzania🇹🇿. Jacobus Cilliers buff.ly/3AI51bQ

Excited to see our paper published. Early intervention matters and it persists! We intervened in Setswana in Gr 1-3 & the benefits were seen Gr 7!

Two take-aways from our paper: 1) Clear long-term (to Grade 7) effects of an early grade (Gs 1-3) reading intervention. 2) Initial impacts in foundational skills (fluency) translate to longer-term impacts in higher-order skills (comprehension). #RTIFellow

Differentiated learning holds so much promise for improving learning around the world. See link below for research on this method (me, with Adrienne Lucas Sabrin Beg and follow up work with Stephanie Bonds )

Really happy to see this in print. Will do a full thread later but big picture take-aways: (1) Admin data on learning in India has severe manipulation (2) No easy statistical fixes. Be v cautious using these for research or policy (3) We can do better (companion RCT in EJ)

Millions of lives saved. And now the PEPFAR data website is no more. Ironically, the original landmark JAMA study showing PEPFAR was turning the tide on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic was coauthored by... Jay Bhattacharya, Trump's pick to run NIH.

This is heartbreaking and staggering. And such a strategic blunder. The US reputation globally will be tarred for decades and decades.
