The past few days have been horrific, and many are still trying to make sense of what has unfolded. The state must demonstrate its commitment to preventing such harm against civilians becoming a recurring norm. To that end, I believe the following (concurrent) steps must be

1/4 Killing civilians, or inciting it, is a stain on us all - all #Syria-ns. In armed conflicts, by state or non-state actors, it is a war crime. So are kidnapping, humiliation, forced displacement, looting, or urging any of these acts. No excuses.

Also a reminder that Ukraine, unlike Russia, is a democracy with a strong civil society, despite all its problems. No such protests would be allowed for a second in Moscow.

Every time I write “Druze,” “Bedouins,” “Muslims,” or any sect, I want to scream. I never defined myself by the one I was born into. I believed in “the Syrian people are one.” Having to explain this now—because of sectarian violence—is painful and absurd. And I hate it.

Selective justice is not justice. No matter the perpetrator and no matter the victim, all war criminals must be brought to justice.

BBC and DW: both on the ground in southern Syria speaking to victims of the sectarian violence. One spoke to Druze civilians, the other to Bedouin refugees. Both speak of horrors. Now watch as many people only share the stories of one side while ignoring those of the other.

Russia is totally not interested in any territorial conquest beyond Ukraine.
