Why is it when you’re sick you can be fine all day think you’re better and feel worse and worse the later it gets at night?

So I thought, I’m not Christmas shopping this year to save money and trouble but maybe I’ll do those cute family holiday cards I always wanted to send out…so…making cards, gathering addresses, printing them, mailing them is also a lot of money and work.

The climate for Black female intellectuals is heightening my tendency towards perfectionism. Feeling like I have to be the perfect professor, scholar, woman, say the perfect thing all the time. It’s unhealthy and exhausting.

Looking at my tabs and text messages: I am literally working on funeral plans for one elder, hiring caregivers for another, following up on my sick child’s medical test results, re-reading the Black Atlantic and prepping for class all at once. This is not ok.

Before a quarter I usually go in before classes start, clean up my office, walk and plan my route to my classrooms, test technology, be perfect on the first day. This quarter life didn’t allow me to do that. I got lost, and students helped me with the new projector. It was fine.

A week home sick with adults at his beck and call has made this kid a friggin’ tyrant. I keep telling myself, this week is almost over.

Comfort re-watching Lord of the Rings. Been watching trilogy backwards a little at a time over several weeks. After seeing how broken down Frodo is in the last film you forget how happy and light and bright eyed he was in the first. Elijah Wood did that.

Comfort watching The Long Kiss Goodnight with Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. From the ridiculous action sets: yes killing-by-pie, yes shooting goons while on ice skates, yes the Black man surviving! to the genuine chemistry and love between the characters, shit still slaps.

Netflix has Fried Green Tomatoes. I have fond memories of watching this with my mom growing up but I just know the Black representation is probably atrocious. I’ve been watching familiar things that make me happy to self soothe but think maybe I should leave this one alone…
