My perfectly nice gathering I worked so hard for decimated by arguing over misogyny and transphobia. And all they have to do is show up and eat not even bring a dish. We be so attached to these systems of oppression, it’s scary.

Damn. This reminds me of when I was doing a booktube challenge where one of the books was supposed to be from the 1900s and people were in the comments talking about they couldnt find a book they wanted to read from the 1900s.

About to present at Mixed Feelings at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Such a cool event and I wish I had some friends and family here with me to see me in action. I do so many cool things but I be so busy I don’t promote enough. #mixedfeelings #palmspringsartmuseum

Parenting a child with special needs is a lifelong exercise in getting over yourself. Getting past ego. Prioritizing what the child is experiencing over what you are feeling. Knowing when to intervene and when to let go. It’s beautiful and hard. #specialneedsparenting

Watching Black Cake. Covey, Girl you left a whole mess for your children to slip around in and the shit is riveting. But let’s tell our family secrets before we die if we’re going to tell them at all. #BlackCake #BlackCakeonhulu

I know the grade grubbing at this time of year is exhausting but that Chronicle of Ed piece a lot of y’all are posting that says it’s about grade grubbing but is really blaming DEI and marginalized students for grade inflation is not cute. Read beyond headlines please.

The fact that I’ve built up enough of an ornament and decoration collection that this year I just went to the garage and got my boxes and didn’t buy a single thing is making me realize I am a whole adult with holiday traditions. It’s only taken about ten years.

So I thought, I’m not Christmas shopping this year to save money and trouble but maybe I’ll do those cute family holiday cards I always wanted to send out…so…making cards, gathering addresses, printing them, mailing them is also a lot of money and work.

The climate for Black female intellectuals is heightening my tendency towards perfectionism. Feeling like I have to be the perfect professor, scholar, woman, say the perfect thing all the time. It’s unhealthy and exhausting.

Looking at my tabs and text messages: I am literally working on funeral plans for one elder, hiring caregivers for another, following up on my sick child’s medical test results, re-reading the Black Atlantic and prepping for class all at once. This is not ok.

Before a quarter I usually go in before classes start, clean up my office, walk and plan my route to my classrooms, test technology, be perfect on the first day. This quarter life didn’t allow me to do that. I got lost, and students helped me with the new projector. It was fine.

A week home sick with adults at his beck and call has made this kid a friggin’ tyrant. I keep telling myself, this week is almost over.

Comfort re-watching Lord of the Rings. Been watching trilogy backwards a little at a time over several weeks. After seeing how broken down Frodo is in the last film you forget how happy and light and bright eyed he was in the first. Elijah Wood did that.

Comfort watching The Long Kiss Goodnight with Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. From the ridiculous action sets: yes killing-by-pie, yes shooting goons while on ice skates, yes the Black man surviving! to the genuine chemistry and love between the characters, shit still slaps.

Netflix has Fried Green Tomatoes. I have fond memories of watching this with my mom growing up but I just know the Black representation is probably atrocious. I’ve been watching familiar things that make me happy to self soothe but think maybe I should leave this one alone…
