Some (small) good news for the govt on public finances this morning: borrowing at the start of the 2025-26 is a little below the Office for Budget Responsibility's forecast (although is up on last April at £20.2bn); and Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revised down 2024-25's huge borrowing number from £151.9bn to £148.3bn.

May bounce back in the UK PMI from trade-uncertainty-driven fall in April will be welcome for the government. But level remains weak (and consistent with the economy contracting in May). Simon Pittaway has all the details here:
