The Hamilton School at UFlorida in a very short time has build a brilliant and accomplished faculty just by seeking people who didn't fit in at 'elite' institutions. High school students who want a real education should be applying to UF Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Ed The New Criterion @CLT

Case in point: we once had a truly brilliant applicant for our PhD with Latin Greek and other modern languages, fine prose stylist, first-class recommendations from well-known scholars. The only problem was that he was a priest and would wear a Roman collar. "Wouldn't fit in" was

Too many people talk about X arousing negative passions. I find it to be a test of verbal prudence (which is not to say that I always pass the test). "The man who does not know how to be silent does not know how to speak." (Bp. Francesco Patrizi of Siena).

Agree. In history, military, diplomatic, and political history are dispreferred because predominantly male, and most history depts until the last decade have been trying to hire more females, who tend to shine more in social and cultural history.

Happy feast of St. Bonaventure, the great Franciscan philosopher. For his feast, the Church bids us read Wisdom 8:2-7, 16-18, a beautiful meditation on the love of Wisdom and its benefits. It was written probably in Alexandria 50 years before the birth of Christ.

My magnum opus has arrived. Magnum as in 1249 pages, 800 illustrations, most in color, 75 maps, well over a hundred extracts from primary sources, chronologies and lists of key terms. I wrote Volume 1, from the ancient Greeks to the Renaissance, and my oldest friend in academe,

There is an excellent encyclopaedia, The Classical Tradition, ed. Grafton, Most, and Settis, published by Harvard University Press. Recommended. This book however is a narrative history of a 2500-year old tradition.

I think Encounter Books is expecting individual purchases to be made from Amazon or other online booksellers. There will be discount deals from the publisher for course adoptions if I am not mistaken Encounter Books

When people talk about how the use of AI is going to destroy the human mind, I can't help remembering Plato's view that literacy was destroying human memory.

When I first tried to familiarize myself with Catholic social teaching, which was far too late in my career as an intellectual historian, the first thing that struck me was that the popes from Leo XIII to JP II were neither socialists nor free market liberals but were seeking the
