We show that better access to debt markets mitigates the negative effects of uncertainty on corporate behavior. Expecting to have easier access to debt markets in case of cash shortfalls, firms save less and invest more in intangible assets and perform better 2/n

Our paper sheds light on the mechanisms through which uncertainty has real effects on the economy and suggests that government interventions aimed at improving access to external finance reduce firms’ vulnerability to uncertainty shocks.

Employment cuts also occur in hospitals acquired by non-PE acquirers, but the skilled worker ratio does not increase in those hospitals. PE-backed acquirers, especially publicly traded ones, are also uniquely associated with reductions in overhead costs. 2/3

This research provides new evidence on the role of PE acquirers in the hospital industry and paints a more nuanced picture with the differences between PE and non-PE acquirers, as well as between PE backed acquirers with and without access to public capital markets. 3/3
