News on the Zorya defense system: anchors to the peptidoglycan and detects membrane disruption by phage. It has a flagella-motor-like device that rotates once activated. So cool! I've been waiting for insights on Zorya since we first described it 5 years ago. Congrats Tylor&co!

Check out my latest work from Chris Waters lab with our amazing collaborators Jeremy Schroeder Freddolino Lab on how V. cholerae maintains its cyclic di-GMP levels to maintain the balance between motile and sessile forms. (1/3) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Beautiful story Dr. Aathmaja Anandhi Rangarajan and very happy to work with Jeremy and Freddolino Lab on this (with Geoff Severin, Macy E. Pell, PhD, and Meng Hsieh co-authors from my group and Rebecca Hurto from Lyida's team). So important to not just consider biofilm formation, but also dispersal!

Tonight I performed the Volta experiment as a rite of passage as newest professor in the Department of Microbiology at the U. of I. I also received word that one of my papers was curated into an ASM collection for its citation frequency over the last two years. What a day!

MGI's Beth Ottosen and Ritam Sinha have a new paper out in mBio about their new neonatal mouse model which will help better study infections in human infants. Using that model, they found evidence that E. hormaechei feeds on mucus in the intestines. tinyurl.com/5598z3w7
