Amazing nature morning! Whilst ringing it was nice to catch both lesser and common whitethroats to compare. Plus my first views of an adder! (Saw this dark one and a lighter variation). Cuckoo and turtle dove both calling at the site. Slow worm too. #ringing BTO #nature

We've been surveying for butterflies in the last few weeks. My photos through binoculars are improving! Common blue, grizzled skipper, small heath. #fieldworkfinds #notbirds !!

The last blue tit chicks of the year in the SRG boxes. Ringed a little while ago with Sam Lloyd One great tit nest left to fledge. In the midst of nest checks I lament that I have no time but it's gone in a flash and all over for another year. BTO #nestrecording

Another great recovery. Adult male Goldcrest ringed on 10 Sep 2019 at Ballinphellic, Cork by Dr Jenny Coomes died hitting a window in Newcastle West, Limerick on 13 Jun 2023. With an average lifespan of 2 years is this an Irish longevity record? BirdWatch Ireland BTO EURING

Bird nests made from anti-bird spikes! 🤯 Even for me as a nest researcher, these are the craziest bird nests I've ever seen. Today my paper came out on this rebellious behaviour. And it's like telling a joke... A thread. 🧵

Recent fieldwork finds. Lots of small skippers about. Quite the colour contrast on these mating marbled whites. 🦋 Unknown caterpillar species... 🐛 and a winged yellow-headed grasshopper (that's not the species name, again it's an unknown critter!). 🦗 #ecology #fieldwork

An excellent course on advanced data analysis in R with Rob Thomas and Dr Jez Smith . Everything was so well explained and I'm very inspired to try new approaches on my data. A thoroughly enjoyable two days. #RStats Eco-explore

This BTO guide came in the post and I can already tell it's going to be very useful! An excellent resource, particularly useful for reminders of moult, fat, muscle and brood patch scores. #ringing #nestrecording

Really interesting article. At GCSE, Biology is focused on how processes work. It would be great to supplement this with knowledge about species, habitats and how the natural world is connected. 🌍 Inspiring the next generation. #naturalhistorygcse

Such devastating news. As my PhD and BSc supervisor, Bill introduced me to molecular ecology and trophic interactions, and deepened my entomological love. Beyond that, his warmth and humour helped me through some very trying times, and he fundamentally changed my life path. 🦋🧬

Stopping behaviour in gulls is vital in the context of diversified foraging (e.g. chip-pilfering 🍟). Learning important info about Edinburgh’s favourite birds 😉 from Camille Troisi #ASABwinter2023

A great turn-out for the 16th International #Seabird Group Conference! 🥳#CoimbraSeabirds We’re only halfway through, and already had lots of fantastic seabird talks! Huge thanks to the ECOTOP team at Universidade de Coimbra for putting on such an excellent event 🤩

A very interesting and different perspective to document our seabird declines. Signe Christensen-Dalsgaard compares old footage and photos with what the seabird cliffs in Norway look like today. We need to shift our baselines back, to help us look forward.
