We've been teaching a new course on Deep Learning for Ecology, as part of AIMS South Africa's Al for Science Master's program 🧪with the support of Google DeepMind! We've been equipping the students with machine learning skills for bioacoustics, posture estimation, and bio-logging.

Teaching 26 students from across Africa what I learned during my Phd: automatic detection of sea turtle behavior from bio-loggers using #deeplearning A first in bio-logging where deep learning remains underexplored ! Such a rewarding experience 🙏! AIMS South Africa , Emmanuel Dufourq

Our researchers’ work is in nature! Emmanuel Dufourq & Lorène Jeantet with researchers from Stellenbosch University, UCT & NITheCS, and ecologists & data scientists from France, Australia & Norway, trained deep learning #algorithms to calculate how much chinstrap penguins eat.

Congratulations to our student Voara who defended his AI for Science master project this morning !🥳 He explored LSTM and Transformer, #deeplearning algorithms, to automatically identify green turtle behaviors from accelerometer ! Emmanuel Dufourq , AIMS South Africa

Thanks to innovations in technology that have allowed for ever more powerful remote monitoring, our understanding of their foraging behaviour has rapidly grown during the last decades. - theconversation.com/diving-with-pe… 💻 UCT SEEC/ Aimee Higgins/ Mandela University #ScienceAndTech

The CNN and V-net predictions were validated by animal-borne video data, in collaboration with SEEC Lorène Jeantet Marianna Chimienti Grace Sutton MAPRU Emmanuel Dufourq Andy Lowther NITheCS. A lay summary, published in Nature Africa,👉nature.com/articles/d4414……
