Why did Australia just have its wettest November on record? A 'perfect storm' of climate drivers: 🌧 La Niña 🌧 Positive Southern Annular Mode 🌧 Negative Indian Ocean Dipole 🌧 Active Madden-Julian Oscillation

#AUViews #AUResearch @CayneLayton, a marine ecologist University of Tasmania IMAS, says the fallout has made the Australian state a “sad poster child” for global climate change. Read more 👉 bit.ly/3GuDIzH via The Guardian.

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Why is this needed? - Because less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women - women in STEM fields publish less, are paid less for their research and do not progress as far as men #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience

2016 bleaching- I honestly thought that would be the moment Australians stood up & fought for the #GreatBarrierReef 2017 bleaching, I felt depressed. 2020 bleaching, I was drafting the #IPCC section on GBR & I just felt numb 2022 bleaching & now I’m just really f&cking angry

It's not just the GBR that's cooking. Current heat stress is pervasive across Australia's oceans. Some coral bleaching is already evident on Western Australian reefs and the outlook is grim.

I wish everyone on Earth knew how genuinely "off the charts" key planetary trends are right now, and how abnormal and critical it is. Things like atmospheric CO2 fraction, heat extremes on land and ocean, biodiversity loss and extinction rates. All alarms should be going off

A reminder that the megaheatwave engulfing much of the world is happening during a La Nina "cool cycle." God help us when the next El Nino hits

The Bureau of Meteorology, Australia has just issued a La Niña ALERT, meaning there is now a 70% chance of La Niña being declared later this year. If it is, this would be the first time on record we have seen 3 consecutive La Niña events coinciding with back-to-back negative IOD years.

Will this La Niña ever end?? Ocean SST anomalies from a few days ago, showing a textbook pattern of colder than average temperatures extending from the east - central tropical Pacific:

⚠️ My first paper has been published! ⚠️ My honours work using #DNA to identify #shark species sold as flake in fish&chip shops in #SouthAustralia We are hoping that our research will provide insight 👀 about how umbrella terms ☂️ can ‘take-away’ consumers choice 🍽️ ⬇️ Link

🧵1/3 The ‘heartbeat’ of #Antarctica 💓 is the largest seasonal physical change on the surface of Earth, where sea ice expands to cover roughly three times the area of Australia in winter and shrinks to about a fifth of that in summer. Read on... (animation: NASA Earth)
