Excited to start our another year of research in Hervey Bay, Australia with Pacific Whale Foundation to determine if the "Bucket List" adventure of #swimwithwhales is impacting whale behavior.

#Humpbackwhales and #bottlenosedolphin on the first trip of the 2019 season in Hervey Bay! Research conducted opportunistically aboard PWF Eco-Adventures Australia's commercial vessel and whales were not approached closer than 100 meters, per Australian regulations

Got to watch a live dissection of a wedge-tailed shearwater at the HI-MDAP Research workshop on Oahu today. I am happy to say this bird was one of the ~3% that don’t have debris in their stomachs.

We have a new paper out using land-based observations of whales and vessels in Hawaii and show the need for additional guidelines for vessel operators in Hawaii. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

The Maui Nui bottlenose stock is on the decline 📉 down from ~300 in the 2000s to just under 100 today. This work is the result of great collaborative efforts.

I am happy to see that the nearly 2000 pieces of debris Pacific Whale Foundation collected and photographed from at sea surveys can support great initiatives like this!

Is this a bottlenose dolphin? A false killer whale? Nope! This is a pygmy killer whale (Feresa attenuata) — and our fourth species highlight for the #MMRPChristmasCountdown.

1/n Yes! We deployed the 1st ever CATs suction-cup video tag on a false killer whale! Why are we doing this? 1. To determine the fine-scale behavior associated with foraging and prey-handling to guide strategies to mitigate depredation + hooking events youtube.com/watch?v=-o_CxQ…
