Knowledge has been increasingly integrated in machine learning. What are the benefits of knowledge in learning? How to measure the quality of knowledge in learning? Stop by our poster in Hall E #300 tomorrow in #ICML2022.

You’ve heard of AI’s algorithmic inequity. But what about its environmental inequity? Shaolei Ren explains how AI’s environmental costs are not evenly distributed and can be disproportionately higher in certain regions than in others. themarkup.org/hello-world/20…

AI has a huge hidden environmental cost that we want to keep shining a light on. So, in our latest newsletter, Nabiha Syed sits back down with Shaolei Ren to get info on his latest research into the environmental inequities caused by AI. themarkup.org/hello-world/20…

"By 2025, without sustainable artificial intelligence (AI) practices, AI will consume more energy than the human workforce, significantly offsetting carbon zero gains." Really? We must act now (and not forget water and equity)!šŸ˜€šŸ˜€ gartner.com/en/newsroom/pr…

I'll be attending #ICML2023 next week to serve as a conference volunteer and present our paper "Learning for Edge-Weighted Online Bipartite Matching with Robustness Guarantees"(arxiv.org/abs/2306.00172)! Happy to chat if you are around!

Our new AI water paper is out! Updates include water withdrawal vs. consumption and scope definition. In 2027, global AI May withdraw 4-6 billion cubic meters of scope 1&2 water, equivalent to to 4-6 Denmark or half of UK! That’s really a lot of water! arxiv.org/abs/2304.03271

Thank you, nature, for featuring our AI water paper as one of the two preprints in your 11/28 briefing: Data centres’ huge ā€˜water footprint’ becomes clear amid AI boom nature.com/articles/d4158…

I am delighted to share that I am joining CS@University of Houston in Fall 2024! I am seeking for PhD students to join my team. More details can be found in jyang-ai.github.io/papers/files/O….

Happy to see our research highlighted in the UN Trade & Development report (p95): To reduce carbon footprint of data centres, it is preferable to "follow the sun"; while to cut the water footprint, it is preferable to "unfollow the sun" to avoid high temperature hours in the day!
