George Lansbury on the Poplar Workhouse, 1892: no kindness ever shown. On entry you were stripped, searched, fumigated, no underwear provided, no ā€œsanitary clothes of any sort for women of any ageā€. Mice droppings in the gruel. 2yrs later he got an inquiry & the team were sacked

šŸ“ˆ A shameful rise in child homelessness. Today’s stats must not be ignored. Children are being robbed of stability in temporary accommodation, yet the solution is simple; on 11 June at the Spending Review the government must make the decision to invest in social housing.

This šŸ‘‡ is a political choice. And a direct result of decades of failure to #BuildSocialHousing - failures the government could reverse at the spending review if it chooses. Please help us Shelter persuade them england.shelter.org.uk/support_us/cam…

Ahead of the #SpendingReview in June, we've brought together some of this country’s leading economists, industry figures, and policy experts, to set out the economic and fiscal case for investing in social homes. #BuildSocialHousingšŸ

England's temporary accommodation crisis is leaving record numbers of children without a permanent home – and damaging their health, wellbeing and education. We're calling for action to improve conditions and outcomes for children in temporary accommodation ā¬‡ļø

The verdict? Utterly shameful. Today Housing, Communities & Local Government Committee released a report highlighting the damaging impact of growing up homeless in temporary accommodation, including the appalling conditions faced by thousands of children. committees.parliament.uk/committee/17/h…

London boroughs have one officer for every 7,500 rental homes - leaving enforcement deserts where ā€œnothing will happenā€ if tenants complain about poor quality housing. Research by me for The Londoner the-londoner.co.uk/why-is-londons…

I'm very sad to learn of the recent death of Nick Hedges (b 1943) - a superb documentary photographer of housing and much else and a generous man. His photographs for Shelter of appalling housing conditions in the UK in the late 1960s and 70s did much to encourage reform.
