On this date in 1890, Pittsburgh’s Peek-A-Boo Veach hit an inside-the-park home run off Philadelphia’s Phenomenal Smith in one of the greatest matchups of nicknamed players in MLB history. Veach spent his final big league season with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1890.


On this date in 1899, outfielder Ginger Beaumont collected six hits and scored six runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 18-4. He did all of that despite never hitting the ball out of the infield. His final tally was a bunt hit with two strikes in the ninth.


On this date in 1991, John Wehner went 5-for-5 to become the first Pittsburgh Pirates rookie since Richie Zisk in 1973 to collect five hits in a game as the Bucs beat Atlanta, 12-3, at Three Rivers Stadium.


On this date in 1941, Stu Martin capped off a two-run ninth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates walked off the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, at Forbes Field. After Frankie Gustine tied the game, Martin singled as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded to win it.



On this date in 1960, Bill Virdon, Bob Skinner and Roberto Clemente all homered in a 4-2 Pittsburgh Pirates victory in St. Louis. Bob Friend pitched 8.2 innings for the win and Elroy Face retired the only batter he faced with two runners on base.



On this date in 2018, David Freese capped off a five-RBI night with a walkoff single, as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Mets, 5-4, at PNC Park. Freese became the first Bucco since at least 1920 to be on base at least 5 times and have at least 5 RBI with a walkoff RBI in the same game.

On this date in 1925, Lee Meadows tossed a complete game and improved to 14-5 in a 5-1 win over the Boston Braves. Meadows won 19 games and had 20 complete games for the 1925 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates team.


On this date in 1973, the Pittsburgh Pirates swept a DH from the Phillies at Three Rivers Stadium, winning both games by the score of 5-2. Willie Stargell connected for his 31st home run in game 1 and Richie Zisk went 4-for-4 with two triples in game 2.


On this date in 1964, the Pittsburgh Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Colt .45s at Forbes Field. Vern Law tossed a 5-hit shutout in game 1 with Bill Virdon accounting for the lone RBI in a 1-0 win. The Bucs scored 7 runs on 7 hits in the 6th inning of game 2 to win an 8-3 decision.



On this date in 2012, AJ Burnett tossed his 10th career shutout as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs, 5-0, at Wrigley Field. Burnett took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before allowing his only hit on a single by pinch hitter Adrian Cardenas.

On this date in 1918, the Pittsburgh Pirates outlasted the Boston Braves, 2-0, in 21 innings after playing a record 20 scoreless frames to begin the game. Pittsburgh mustered two runs in the final inning off Art Nehf, who pitched all 21 innings for the Braves.


On this date in 1928, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies , 18-4, in Philadelphia. Glenn Wright had three hits and five RBI. George Grantham, Pie Traynor and Fred Brickell all had three RBI apiece. Burleigh Grimes won his 18th game of the season and went 2-for-3 at the plate.


On this date in 1972, Steve Blass improved to 12-5 after allowing one run in 9.0ip as the Pittsburgh Pirates won a 2-1 decision in 10 innings at St. Louis. Vic Davalillo delivered the game-winning hit with a two-out single in the 10th.


On this date in 1992, Alex Cole delivered a walkoff single in the 12th inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 win over the New York Mets. Don Slaught had 2 RBI and scored the winning run on Cole’s single. Bob Walk pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in relief and picked up his fifth win.
