Shannon O’Mac I was a derm resident while pregnant, and derm is not the most taxing of specialties. Yet I ended up having some preterm contractions and was told by ObGyn not to do call a few weeks before I was due. Thankfully, the PDs were so accommodating.

Dara Kass, MD Shannon O’Mac 100% need this data to backup what we all suspect is true re 3rd trimester ( as someone who was advised to reduce hours in third tri but couldn’t and delivered early x2)

Shannon O’Mac I am zero percent surprised by this. My program removed overnights for third trimester which was a great start. But I still had tons of pregnancy complications worsened by residency including my emergency c-section for premature labor and a complete previa during a wards block

Shannon O’Mac I remember being given an excuse by my ob/gyn in my last pregnancy to be given time to eat during my workday because I wasn’t gaining enough weight. I had a protected lunch hour and time for 2 snacks.

Of course, there are exemptions for medical and religious reasons But if we want to protect folks, like those who are immunocompromised And if we want to get our lives back We need environments where everyone is vaccinated Universities, businesses are going to lead the way

Women in health care experience miscarriage rates at twice that of the general population. That is why accommodations like no nights and no call, lifting restrictions, and breaks are essential. Women belong in this profession and we must make it so.

'To be maximally efficient, effective & safe as a surgeon, one needs not one instrument or technique but a whole diverse set of instruments & skills.
