Published today: we made controlled comparisons of social network structures of 5 ant species from 5 subfamilies with diverse life-histories. Some aspects of network structure deeply conserved; others variable. We speculate on links to life-history & ecology 1/

Recent research showed that human gut microbiota complexity isn't fully captured by fecal samples. In contrast, we found that the honeybee microbiota can be precisely analyzed via fecal sampling, with all gut members able to recolonize after fecal transplant!

New ant species showing wound care behaviour! 🐜🚑 In this new study we describe wound care in the desert ant Cataglyphis nodus. Interestingly, sterile injuries received more attention than infected ones and there might be a good reason for doing so... a short thread 🧵 (1/6)

Exciting PhD Opportunity! Branching out from ants we are looking for a motivated and curious PhD student who wants to study why chimps apply insects on their wounds! 🦧🪰🚑Focus is on the insect side of course, so if you want to know more, follow the 🧵 (1/6)

Huge thanks to Waldan Kwong & Kasie Raymann for a fantastic commentary on our @mBio publication! They made our complex 🐝 microbiota study more accessible and stressed the importance of publishing negative results and replicating findings. I love the closing quote by Karl Popper!

We recently found that host maturation could have been a confounder in previous bee microbiota studies. We struggled to publish these 'negative' results. So it is wonderful to see this commentary on the relevance of our work by Kasie Raymann & Waldan Kwong journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…
